"THE LIFE & TIMES OF MAJOR FICTION" [7:11]
NOTE ADDED BY BLOGMASTER ON 9/11/07: Go to the MySpace profile for O'GRADY to hear (and download for free) "Major Fiction" as it appears in the novel/double CD set, ALARM. Professionally mastered by Antreo Pukay at Tell Tale Recording.
Here's the raw version of the track as it was recorded 11/5/05:
http://www.gpayne.net/FC2_Final_2.mp3
Or stream the mp3 rather than requiring download first:
http://www.gpayne.net/FC2.m3u
(Will work well for lower bandwidth connections.)
Mike Daily: Words/Vocals
David Noel Moscovich: Keys/Live Digital Sampling
Luke Strahota: Drums/Drum Machine/Talking Shit at the Beginning
Mia: The Diva
Recorded October 5, 2005, at The Enginehouse in North Portland, Ore.
Engineer: Chutz Ponderosa
O'Grady's Note: My goal in writing this "narrative" was to incorporate every title of every book Fiction Collective/FC2/Black Ice Books has published since its inception in 1974. FC2 Managing Editor Brenda Mills wrote:
"Wow, I love it! Jonathan [Baumbach] should get [his son, Film Director] Noah to make a video for it. Love the end. We were dancing to it. I'm thinking we should play it at our reception at AWP in Austin in March.
You have books in your library that we no longer have even a single copy of!"
Brenda is sending an announcement to FC2's entire membership (to all the original authors whose titles are hereby referenced) on Monday, October 24th--United Nations Day. Very interesting. . . .
We are curious to hear your thoughts. Plz leave a comment at the end!

Do you even know who Esther Williams was? I must have spent way too much time in Greenwich Village when I was a young gal. Now I am old and stupid and clap my hands to hear my 30 something son talk about Esther Williams.

Oh hey, I was just trying to let you off the hook about those older, more obscure titles. This is totally your baby and you're under no obligation to us whatsoever. So, sure, be historically accurate and put all those suckers in there. There's no danger involved. You know, HOGG is still in print and we do have the rights to it (again).

Thank you for sending me the link -- it worked absolutely fine. I was able to play it, in other

I read along to it, as suggested, and you know when you sit and read, watch, or listen to something that just totally blows you away....and you keep thinking, WOW, this cannot possibly get any better? And you sit there and you can feel the WOW-ness of this amazing thing that you're trying to take in, and it does keep getting [even] better and better -- and you can feel your hair curling because it's so fucking good and you get goosebumps all over your body with enjoyment? Listen -- that's exactly how

Hi Mike!
A little more time now. Nice to read your energy-charged missives. Keep it up and stay young forever.
Your collages of FC titles are wonderful, remind me of cadavres exquis of the surrealists. Would love to ged a CD and hear your music.
Enjoyed my trip to Ukraine. Vistied once more the Crimea with its incredible geography and enthic/historical diversity. Saw the palace of the Crimean Tartar khans in Bakhchisaray, the cave Karaim city of Chufut Kale on a 2000 ft high meseta, the 2500 year old Greek city of Khersones
near Sevastopol. Also catacombs in Kyiv and Chernihiv... many things, some of which I had seen before. A wonderful concert by the very popular pop group Elsa's Ocean, with 20,000 screaming kids and me smack in the middle of them.
Felt however a burning need to get back to my computer in the basement and to rivulets of English flowing along the screen. Few things are more enjoyable than work.

Hi - I trained in judo and karate for many years. I was looking for blogs having to do with judo and came across yours. Nice blog. I have my own have my own mixed style school now that offers most of the traditional judo techniques. Come have a look at it if you want.
Judo? Judo?
This may be the first known (documented) instance of a blogger (Mick O'Grady) receiving email notification (as per usual) of a new "blog spam" message that for some reason never appeared on the blog, at which point the blogger (yrs truly) carefully reconstructed the message complete with HTML link and posted it in the comments section of his blog.
See above comment.
Why? Why did I do this?
Technicians for host site Blogger have apparently figured out how to successfully filter the bulk of blog spam messages posted by the ubiquitous "anonymous" programs randomly tagging our blogs in the comments sections.
Some bloggers use the new Word Verification feature to combat blog spam--a precaution I personally do not recommend because some computer users can't leave comments on others' blogs that have Word Verification in place. Some computer users' hard drives happen to freeze when they try to leave comments on blogs that have Word Verification. I may have DSL but I'm on a PC.
So, yeah, I posted the judo blog spam. Rather, I re-posted it. Wait a second. If the comment wasn't successfully posted in the first place, I suppose I posted it. Son of a sea biscuit.
Don't quote me on this, but I'm developing a taste for mindlessly generated blog spam.
The phenomenon brings to mind certain letters from magnificent Beat poet Lew Welch in the Grey Fox Press collection I REMAIN: The Letters of Lew Welch & The Correspondence of His Friends: Volume Two: 1960-1971:
Lew Welch to Kirby Doyle from Forks of Salmon on October 11, 1962
[...] Horrible infestation of rats. Rats scampering over face, clawing at old shakes, nervously scuttling like mad things. No sleep at all for 2 nights. I went mad one night, leaped out of my sleeping bag and pounded the walls. My only light, a kerosene barn lantern, showed many little faces staring down at mefrom the rafters: not frightened, bemused at my antics. By this time I had dozens of little sardine cans filled with poison-pellets. "Eat! Eat!" i screamed, vowing traps, guns unspeakable tortures. Then I went after one with a hammer and broke the handle.
Now all of them are dead, the last one trapped, all the rest poisoned. And I miss them!! They were mountain pack rats, gray with snow-white bellies and white feet. They collect everything. In the enormous nests I found after tearing out the canvas ceiling I found shaving brushes, toothbrushes, .22 cartridges, pencils, and a small calendar I am now using. [...]
This letter excerpt affects me as much--perhaps more--than the Lew's poems and novel have and that's saying a lot because I'm a fan of his work.
So does this:
Lew Welch to Kirby Doyle from Forks of Salmon on May 16, 1963
[...] I am typing on my porch. A snake crawled under the stoop. I hope he eats all my mice. Wasps everywhere. [...]
Everywhere.
Did that make sense? Anytime anyone (or anything) posts something on a blogger's blog, Blogger sends an email to the blogger--notification that a new comment has been added to one's blog.
Sometimes the email goes through fine but the comment does not show up for whatever reason.
It doesn't make it.
And sometimes that hurts.
Other times, one is glad it didn't go through because one would delete it anyway.
Have a nice day.
O'Grady
P.S. If today's video games didn't seem so complicated to a guy who grew up playing arcade games--where one traditionally stood up to play instead of sitting down, I'd play today's video games instead of The Blog.
Other times glad it doesn't show up because

That's a great story. Waiting for more. »
Apparently this MP3 is getting a helluva lot of hits from Japan, according to Chutz Ponderosa, who hosts the track.
Major Fiction.
That's a great story.
Hi there. We'd be grateful if you'd help pass the word about the Ronald Sukenick/American Book Review Innovative Fiction Prize sponsored by Fiction Collective Two (FC2).
====
Eligibility
The Ronald Sukenick/American Book Review Innovative Fiction Contest is open to any writer of English who is a citizen of the United States and who has not previously published with Fiction Collective Two. Submissions may include a collection of short stories, one or more novellas, or a novel. Works that have previously appeared in magazines or in anthologies may be included. Translations and previously self-published collections are not eligible. To avoid conflict of interest, former or current students or close friends of the final judge for 2008, Michael Martone, are ineligible to win the contest. Employees and Board members of FC2 are not eligible to enter.
Judges
Finalists for the Prize will be chosen by the following members of the FC2 Board of Directors: Kate Bernheimer, R. M. Berry, Brian Evenson, Noy Holland, Brenda Mills, Lance Olsen (Chair), Susan Steinberg, and Lidia Yuknavitch.
The winning manuscript in 2008 will be chosen from the finalists by FC2 Board of Directors member Michael Martone.
Selection criteria will be consistent with FC2's stated mission to publish "fiction considered by America's largest publishers too challenging, innovative, or heterodox for the commercial milieu," including works of "high quality and exceptional ambition whose style, subject matter, or form pushes the limits of American publishing and reshapes our literary culture."
For contest updates and full information on FC2's mission, history, aesthetic commitments, authors, events, and books, please visit the website at: fc2.org.
Deadlines
Contest entries will be accepted beginning 15 August 2007. All entries must be postmarked no later than 1 November 2007. The winner will be announced May 2008.
Prize
The Prize includes $1000 and publication by FC2, an imprint of the University of Alabama Press. In the unlikely event that no suitable manuscript is found among entries in a given year, FC2 reserves the right not to award a prize.
Manuscript Format
Please submit either TWO hardcopies of the manuscript, or ONE hardcopy and one Word file of the manuscript on a labeled CD.
The manuscript must be:
--anonymous: the author's name or address must not appear anywhere on the manuscript (the title page should contain the title only); include a separate cover page with your name and contact information;
--typed on standard white paper, one side of the page only; paginated consecutively; bound with a spring clip or rubber bands; no paper clips or staples, please.
Please include a self-addressed, stamped postcard for notification that manuscript has been received, and a self-addressed, stamped, regular business-sized envelope for contest results.
We strongly advise that you send your manuscript first class.
Please retain a copy of your manuscript; FC2 cannot return manuscripts. Submission of more than one manuscript is permissible if each manuscript is accompanied by a $25 reading fee. Once submitted, manuscripts cannot be altered; the winner will be given the opportunity to make changes before publication. Simultaneous submissions to other publishers are permitted, but FC2 must be notified immediately if manuscript is accepted elsewhere. FC2 will consider all finalists for publication.
Submission Address
Full manuscripts, accompanied by a check made out to American Book Review for the mandatory reading fee of $25, should be sent to:

CLMP Contest Ethics Code
CLMP's community of independent literary publishers believes that ethical contests serve our shared goal: to connect writers and readers by publishing exceptional writing. We believe that intent to act ethically, clarity of guidelines, and transparency of process form the foundation of an ethical contest. To that end, we agree to:
1) conduct our contests as ethically as possible and to address any unethical behavior on the part of our readers, judges, or editors;
2) to provide clear and specific contest guidelines--defining conflict of interest for all parties involved; and
3) to make the mechanics of our selection process available to the public.
